New Solenoid Elements in COSY INFINITY
Abstract
We describe several newly introduced elements in the COSY
INFINITY codes, in particular a full array of solenoidal
elements starting from a loop coil to any superposition of
straight solenoids. Utilizing the COSY commands for
misalignments, it also is possible to construct bending
beamlines consisting of only solenoidal elements, which is
important for modern neutrino factory designs. Since the
fringe field of coils extends very far longitudinally,
typically beyond a hundred times the diameter of the coils,
accurate but fast field computation is necessary. In COSY,
the 3D fields along the integration of transfer map through
such an element are computed using a Differential Algebra
based PDE solver, which is very fast and only requires the
analytical axial potential. By examples, we illustrate the
feature of each solenoidal element and how to simulate
realistic solenoidal beamlines combined with the other
non-solenoidal elements.
