The Helmholtz Coils Measurement System*

Abstract

The Magnetic Measurement Facility at the Advanced Photon Source has equipment for testing and modifying the magnetic strength of individual magnet blocks. These blocks are usually checked for dimensional tolerances and have both magnetic field distribu tion and the total magnetic moment vector measured. The Helmholtz Coils Measurement System is being used for these measurements. Recent upgrade of this system is reported. Upgrade includes replacement of obsolete hardware like an analog integrator, an analog voltmeter and a step motor by fast high resolution ADC and a servomotor. Software for control, data acquisition and analysis of magnetic data was developed with Visual Basic. Upgrade resulted in an increase of measurement precision from 0.1% to 0.03% in the magnitude of the moment vector.
