New Mechanisms for Optical Injection into Laser Wake Field Accelerators
Abstract
In the large wake-field limit (potential approaching mc^2),
the
wake field acquires focusing properties that are
advantageous to
particle capture and acceleration. Specifically, the
fraction of
the accelerating phase that is transversely focusing
expands to
most of the accelerating phase. This facilitates the
injection
of particles into the laser wake fields. As a consequence,
it is
possible to inject particles using either an oppositely
polarized
backward pulse or an incoming plasma ramp. We simulate
this
system using VORPAL, an arbitrary dimensional C++ code.
Our
results show that beams with properties as good as seen in
other
optical injection schemes can be produced.
